10/1/2020 0 Comments 3 Common Myths About Yoga
Whenever I tell people I teach yoga, I get one of two responses:
"Oh wow, I'd love to take one of your classes." OR "Oh, I can't do yoga. I'm not flexible." There are a lot of beliefs like this second response that keep people from trying yoga. It makes me sad that so many people miss out on the wonderful benefits of a regular yoga practice because of these kind of beliefs. So I'd like to dispel the top three myths I often hear people say about yoga. Do you believe any of these: Myth #1: You can only do yoga if you're really flexible. Truth: Practicing yoga helps you increase flexibility. Yoga uses a combination of strength, flexibility, and balance, so even if you find you’re not winning in the area of flexibility, you can focus more on the strength and balance aspects until you’ve improved your flexibility. Myth #2: Yoga is a religion and not for Christians. Truth: In the U.S., yoga is not a religion nor a religious practice. The body, mind, and breath exist in all humans. Yoga brings these three together holistically to help you live a more centered and grounded life. Practicing yoga does not require you to "convert" to Hinduism or any other religion. Myth #3: Only young, fit women do yoga. Truth: Yoga is for people of all ages, genders, and walks of life. There are many who continue to practice well into their 70s and beyond. It's important that you know your own body and abilities. Only do what you can in the moment. Yoga provides the same health benefits whether you are male or female, despite yoga classes usually having more women. Ironically, yoga was started by men thousands of years ago and practiced exclusively by men for a long time. I debunk these and other common myths about yoga as well as discover what yoga is, and how it can transform your life in my online workshop: Yoga: Much More Than Poses The word yoga in sanskrit has many meanings. One is "to unite." Another is "to tie the strands of the mind together." One thing is certain, yoga is much more than what we think of it here in the West. In this workshop, we'll go a little deeper than poses. You will learn: * Why the biggest myths about yoga keep you off the mat (truths) * What the real goal of yoga is, and why it’s important (origins and goals) * How yoga changes you from the inside out (eight limbs) * Why you should try pranayama (breathing exercises) If you'd like to learn more about yoga, simply complete this form and I'll send you a link to the workshop: Is yoga right for you?Get access to a short, simple overview.
